Alfreida Scott Obituary

Olean- Alfreida Jane (Wiley) Scott, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother of Olean, passed away peacefully Tuesday (September 19, 2023) after a lengthy illness.

Freida was the daughter of John and Stella Wiley.  She was born on December 20, 1939, in Salamanca.  Her childhood years were spent in Humphrey. Freida graduated from Ellicottville Central School in 1957.  Shortly after graduation, Freida proudly moved to Olean where she began a career as a telephone operator.

On April 22, 1960, Freida married the love of her life, James L. Scott from Olean, Freida and Jim just celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this past April.

Freida was manager at Hickory Farms when the Olean Center Mall came to Olean.  Later she worked at the Country Christmas Shoppe in downtown Olean.  She absolutely loved this job.

Freida was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and involved in many church activities.  She was a leader of nursery care, altar guild society, taught Sunday School, was a member of the women’s auxiliary, and she even acted as a Sunday School superintendent.  Church was very important to her.    While residing in Florida during the winter, they were active in the Arcadia Methodist Church.

Freida often volunteered for school activities.  She was a Boardmanville Elementary PTA Board Member and a room mother for all of her children.  Freida was a: Bluebird and a Campfire girl leader.  She even took a group of girls to Camp Honeybrook for an overnight stay.  That overnight stay consisted of a foot of snow that welcomed all in the a.m.  Freida was a volunteer for the Olean General Hospital; she was a neighborhood March of Dimes coordinator, and when she was diagnosed with cancer, she became a Relay for Life champion.

Freida enjoyed baking, cooking, homemaking skills, golfing, and spending time with her friends and family.  One of her proudest moments was being able to golf in the practice round at the Masters with Fuzzy Zoeller.  That moment gave her the love and interest in golfing (bragging rights too!)

Freida and Jim spent their retired years in Arcadia, Florida where they golfed, played cards, and socialized with many individuals from all over the country.

Freida was predeceased by her older brothers John Wiley and James Wiley.  Her brother, Tom survives in Conroe, Texas.   In addition, she was predeceased by her one-year old grandson Ethan Michael Scott.

Freida is survived by her husband James L. Scott, her children:  Kathy (Dan) Koenig of Greenville, South Carolina; Mike (Karin) Scott of Montgomery, Texas; Chris (Mark) Stavish of Olean, and Marcia (Rosa) Scott of Irmo, South Carolina.

She is also survived by the following grandchildren:  Logan Scott of Texas, Jake Koenig of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Kira (Scott) Warren of Irmo, South Carolina; Abby Stavish of Greenville, South Carolina, and Maddy Stavish of San Diego, California.  She was a great grandmother to four.
