Portville- Bernard C. Baldwin, a longtime Portville resident, passed away Thursday (January 7, 2021) at the Olean General Hospital.
Born June 9, 1936 in Erie, PA, he was the son of the late, Claire and Irene Huegel Baldwin. On November 28, 1959, he married Margaret “Peg” Hirsch, who survives.
Bernard was a graduate of York, PA Catholic High School. He received his Bachelor of science degree from Gannon University and his Master of business administration from St. Bonaventure University.
Bernard worked for the former AVX and later, owned and operated River Valley Farms in Belfast. He was a forty year member of the Portville Volunteer Fire Department . Bernard was a member of the former Sacred Heart Church in Portville and served as a Eucharistic minister. He was a member and past President of Portville Central School Board of Education and past member and President of the Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES. Bernard also was a member, past President, and on the Board of Directors at the Bartlett County Club.
In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing.
Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 61 years and eight daughters, whom he adored; Judith (Mark) Niehaus, Margaret (Michael) Blask, Julia (Todd) Reynolds, Mary (Michael) Makarowski, Catherine (Millard) Berry, Colleen (Mark) Dulieu, Anne (Matthew) Veres, and Elizabeth Nothem; 28 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; one brother, James Baldwin; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by; one sister, Carole Lehr and one brother, John Baldwin.
Friends will be received at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 51 S. Main St, Portville on Sunday from 4-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday (January 11, 2021) at 10am at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, Olean. Burial will follow in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.
