OLEAN, N.Y. — Charles “Glenn” Barber, 96, of Olean, passed away Monday (Feb. 13, 2023) at the Highland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wellsville.
Born January 4, 1927, in Cyclone, Pa., he was the son of the late Clinton and Frieda Work Barber.
Charles graduated from Bradford (Pa.) High School and enlisted in the Navy on the same day. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as Navy EMC3C in World War II. After his service, he moved to Olean and married Myrna Joyce Lindsey, who predeceased him in 2014.
He was a member of the American Legion and Elks Club for many years. Charles worked for a number of electrical contractors and eventually started his first business, G. Barber Electric. Charles and Myrna also owned and operated Weston Craft Supplies in Weston Mills and Barbers Trailer Ranch located on Happy Hollow Road in Olean.
In the early 1960s Charles and Myrna renovated their barn to house The Ranch Dance, a club that met every Saturday night for live music and square dancing. After the club was no longer active the barn was again renovated to include a basketball court and an addition used to host family reunions, parties, and wedding receptions.
Charles is survived by his children, Linda (Ken) Jordan of Wellsville and Alan (Liz Berkeley) of Pittsford; one brother, Harold (Winnie) Barber; four grandchildren, Hannah Barber, Lucas Barber, Angela (Tom) Delahunt, and Eric (Heather) Jordan; six great-grandchildren, Lauren, Shannon, Brayden, Jack, Ben and Hudson; four great great-grandchildren, Gabby, Lucas, Nico, and Giuliana; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his beautiful wife Myrna, Charles was predeceased by his brother, Wilber Barber, and sisters Vivian Bruce, Betty Stoddard, Grace Fowler, Deloris Ensell, Mary Barrett, Joan Appleby, and Joyce Flagg.
There will be no scheduled visitation or funeral planned. A celebration of Charles’s life will take place at a later date.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
