Deacon Charles “Charlie” Doman friend to all
Olean- Deacon Charles Andrew Doman “Charlie” passed away Friday (August 5, 2022) at Olean General Hospital.
Charlie was born April 18, 1938 at home on Seneca Avenue in Olean. He was the son of Donald and Helen Hill Doman.
Charlie attended Olean Schools and when he completed the eleventh grade, he left school to join the Navy on April 20, 1955 as a Seaman Recruit. Charlie accepted Christ at a very young age. He has been a member of Sacred Temple Church of God in Christ in Olean for 80 years. There he spoke frequently about his grandmother Mary Walker (Gran), who he admired greatly. He served as a Sunday school teacher, Trustee Board member, Deacon, and helped with the maintenance department. He was also a member of Friendship Church of God in Christ in Friendship as a Sunday school teacher for three years, riding along with the late Pastor Emmett Malone to help out.
Charlie worked as a laborer at Saint Bonaventure University, New York Conservation Dept., and the city of Olean Sanitation Department. He retired in 1993 with having made many, many friends as he was walked behind the sanitation truck with that great smile of his.
Charlie inspired his niece Renee to become a nurse, after having taken care of him for many years during his travels to and from the VA hospital. His niece Rebecca and her son Leontae, also cared for Charlie and spent many enjoyable hours with him. He was close to his sister Maureen, even though they were miles apart.
He is survived by his siblings, Maureen Hill of Atlanta, GA, and Calvin Bolden of Buffalo, NY; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Pastor Gerald Sr. and Tonya Slack of Olean.
He was predeceased by parents; grandparents, Emmanuel and Mary Ellen Walker; siblings, Rebecca Sherrell, Rhoda Brooks, Sidney Doman, Leo Bolden, Mary June Coleman and Pamela Emma Hawkins.
Friends will be received at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State Street, Olean on Monday (August 15, 2022) from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be Tuesday (August 16, 2022) 11am at Sacred Temple Church of God in Christ in Olean. Burial will follow in Mt. View Cemetery, Olean.
