Cherlyn Hillman Savage
Hinsdale – Cherlyn A. Savage, 77, of Hinsdale, passed away on Wednesday (September 27, 2023) at Olean General Hospital.
Born in Buffalo on July 19, 1946, she was the daughter of Frederick and Juanita Osgood Hillman. On July 5, 1981, she married Patrick J. Savage at her parent’s home in Hinsdale. Officiated by her father, a Justice of the Peace at the time. Patrick passed away on July 15, 2019.
Cherlyn graduated from Hinsdale Central School in 1964 and Bryant & Stratton Business Institute in Buffalo in 1965. Following graduation, she worked in the public relations department of Erie County Savings Bank before moving to Burlington, Vermont, where she worked for General Electric. After living in Vermont for four years, she lived in Portsmouth, VA, Athens, Greece, and Rochester before returning to Hinsdale in 1980. Cherlyn worked at Manufacturers Hanover in Olean until 1994, then for Vector Marketing from 2002 until her retirement in 2009 due to illness.
Cherlyn received a double lung transplant in 2009 and was always grateful to the donor who improved her quality of life. She was also grateful to the doctors, nurses, and other personnel at the Cleveland Clinic for their excellent care throughout the years.
Cherlyn enjoyed reading, baking, cross-stitching, sewing, and spending time with friends and family. She was a member of the Hinsdale United Methodist Church.
Cherlyn is survived by two children, Jennifer (Ron) Gobien Kennedy of Lynchburg, VA., and Jason (Lisa) Gobien of Hinsdale; four stepchildren, Karen (Mike) Jackson of Colorado Springs, CO., Michael (Ruby) Savage of Myrtle Beach, SC., Mariann Savage of Cape Coral, FL., and Scott (Karrie) Savage of Cape Coral, FL.; seven grandchildren, Bayly, Daphne and Averi Gobien, and Dawson, Peyton, Reganne and Taylyn Kennedy; four step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Cort (Jan) Hillman of Unionville, MI., and Kim (Sue) Hillman of Cuba; and several nieces, nephews and their children.
She was predeceased by her parents and her dearly loved husband, Patrick.
At Cherlyn’s request, no scheduled visitation or funeral will be planned. Burial will be at the family’s convenience in Hinsdale Cemetery, Maplehurst.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Cherlyn also wanted people to consider being organ donors and to let their family know their wishes so “the gift of life” could be given to other people, as it was to her.
