Ethel M. Layfield loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother
Olean- Ethel M. Layfield, of Layfield Drive, Olean, passed away peacefully Sunday (November 12, 2023) in her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born September 28, 1941, in Olean. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Charlotte Barton Button. On October 17, 1959, at Sacred Heart Church in Portville, she married the love of her life, Richard D. Layfield, who passed away on January 14, 2021.
During their life together they enjoyed spending time at their camp in Cyclone, PA., as well as traveling to various states in their camper. Ethel and Dick were often found entertaining family and friends in their home, playing cards, games, etc. They were avid fans of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres, and enjoyed playing bingo in their later years.
Ethel worked at St. Bonaventure University after raising her family, retiring in 2003. She will be remembered as a peaceful and kind individual who always put her family first. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Spending time with her loved ones gave her the most pleasure in life.
Surviving are two sons, William (Chris Cole) Layfield of Olean, and Michael (Marilyn White) Layfield of Melbourne, FL.; grandchildren, Caylie Layfield and Kelsey (Brendon) O’Keefe; a great-granddaughter, Alayna Chaffee; a great-grandson, Kason O’Keefe; a beloved sister, Norma Jean Wilber; several nieces and nephews; and a very special sister in-law, Betty Williams.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 61 years, Richard; and three brothers, Wilber Button, Howard Button and Harry Button.
A Celebration of Life to honor Ethel will be held at a later date and time to be announced. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
