Eugene Lowe Newburg loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather
Olean- Eugene Lowe Newburg, 96, of King St, formerly of Portville, passed away Monday (November 27, 2023) at The Pines Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Olean after a short illness.
Born June 29, 1927 at the Olean General Hospital, Olean, he was the son of the late Floyd and Bernice Lowe Newburg. On August 26, 1950 in the Trinity Methodist Church of Olean, he married the former Marian Blemaster, who survives.
Gene graduated from Portville Central School, class of 1945. He then joined and served in the United States Navy from 1945 - 1947. Gene owned and operated the well-known, Spring Hill Dairy and Restaurant in Portville for decades, where Gene loved to be around people, never having an enemy, putting his trust into everyone.
He had many enjoyable pastimes, playing golf with his friends, both in New York and Arizona. Competing on the local bowling leagues with his bowling friends. He was a longtime member of The Trinity United Methodist Church of Olean, where his love for music led him to sing in the choir and with the Olean Barber Shoppers. He was a lifetime member of the Portville American Legion Post 814, a Charter member of the Portville Lions Club, member of the Portville Masonic Lodge 579 F&AM, member of the Coon Hollow Country Club and a former member of the Bolivar Country Club.
Surviving besides his loving wife, Marian of 73 years; is his children, Jeanne (Ed Mueller) Newburg, James (Marlene) Newburg, Jerry (Elizabeth) Newburg and Julie (Brian) Hendrickson; Gene loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren, they held a special place in his heart, his grandchildren are, Nicole (Stephen) Tanner, Adam (Jordyn) Wysocki, Jenna (Thomas) O’Neil, Dr. Joel (Lindsay) Newburg; great grandchildren, Ethan, Andrew, Jacob and Molly O’Neil, Lia and Nora Cook, Sadie Tanner, Josephine and Jayde Newburg and Aubrie Newburg; special nephews, Thom Olmstead and Mark Olmstead; a niece, Gail Dalhman; and a very special friend of many years, John Brook.
He was predeceased by, his parents; a sister, Roberta Olmstead, and an infant son, Kenneth Eugene Newburg.
Friends will be received at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State Street, Olean, on Thursday, from 5-7 pm, and Friday (Dec. 1, 2023) from 10-11am with a funeral service starting at 11am in the funeral home with Rev. Dawn Quesenberry, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Allegany American Legion. Burial will follow in Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
