“Loving Husband and Father”
Olean- Frank L. Steffen, Jr., of 1618 Walnut Street, Olean, passed away Thursday (July 6, 2023) at the Olean General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born July 15, 1955, in Wilkes Barre, PA, he was the son of the late Frank L. and Bernadine Emerick Steffen, Sr. On August 6, 1983, he married Frances Egnaczak, who survives.
Frank was a 1973 graduate of Portville Central School and attended King’s College in Wilkes Barre, PA. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts Degree from SUNY Fredonia and his Master of Science Degree from Buffalo State College.
Frank enjoyed teaching special needs children and was a special education teacher for The Rehabilitation Center (now Intandem) for several years later becoming the mental health coordinator for the Directions in Independent Living in Olean. He was currently working as a substitute teacher for the Olean City School District. From 2014-2021 he was on the Olean City School Board of Education and served as President from 2019-2020. He also served on the City of Olean Common Council as President and Alderman.
Frank was a Eucharistic Minister for the former Transfiguration Church in Olean and then for the Holy Name of Mary Church in Ellicottville. He was a religion teacher and religious education coordinator at both parishes, where he and his wife were members. He was a member of the Pulaski Club, St. Stephen’s Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2432 in Bradford, PA., and the Portville American Legion Post 814.
He enjoyed watching action movies, Star Trek, and Star Wars; and was an avid Buffalo Bills and Penn State Football fan as well as a St. Bonaventure Basketball fan. Frank loved spending time with his family and friends and taking a nice drive around town.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Andrew (Lisa) Steffen of Calgary, Alberta Canada, and Joshua Steffen of Jamestown; four siblings, Katherine Steffen of Euclid, OH, Robin Steffen of Hinsdale, William Steffen of Westons Mills, and Michael Steffen of Mansfield, OH; one brother-in-law Michael (Theresa) Egnaczak of Salamanca; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends will be received at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State Street, Olean on Sunday from 5-8 pm. A prayer service will be held Monday (July 10, 2023) at 1 pm in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2 pm in St. Bonaventure Church, 95 East Main St., Allegany. Fr. Michael Reyes, OFM, will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
