Weston Mills- Frederick “Fred” M. Evans, of 1131 Promised Land Road, passed away Friday (January 15, 2021) at his home.
Born September 5, 1928 in Punxsutawney, PA, he was the son of the late, Orville and Madeline Schneider Evans. On April 30, 1949 in St. Mary of the Angels Church, he married Delores A. Williams, who predeceased him.
Fred was a graduate of Olean High School and attended St. Bonaventure University. He was a veteran of World War, II serving with the United States Navy Air Corp. He worked for 35 years as a wildlife biologist for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, retiring in 1989.
He was a longtime member of the former Sacred Heart Church in Portville and the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. Fred was a member of St. Bonaventure Golf Course and the Geritol league He was also a life member of the National Rifle Association and the American Hunting Club. He was a member of the Olean Rod and Gun Club and was inducted in the National Wild Turkey Federation Hall of Fame.
Surviving are three sons; David (Renee) Evans of New Mexico, Richard (Cathy) Evans of Pennsylvania, and Gregg Evans of Ashville; one daughter, Cindy Watson of Jamestown; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Dawne Marie Evans Joseph and one brother, Ira “Irish” (Virginia “Chick”) Evans.
Due to Covid-19, services for Fred will be private. Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.
Memorials if desired, may be made to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels Church, 202 S. Union Street, Olean.
