Hadley James Shaffner

West Valley- Hadley James Shaffner, passed away Friday (December 03, 2021) at the age of 90 years old, at his daughter’s home in Elmira.

Born on July 5, 1931, Hadley was the eldest son of Oren and Rose Wheeler Shaffner of Allegany.  He was raised on the family farm on the South Nine Mile Road in Chipmunk and attended school in a one room schoolhouse for 8 years, then went on to graduate from Allegany Central School in 1949.

Hadley worked in farming and oil production as a young man. In 1951, he stole the heart of Patricia Jean Amore and married her on September 15, 1951. They had been married 47 years. In 1952, they joined the family farm in West Valley. During this time period, they lovingly took foster children into their home. Starting in 1965 Hadley worked for Nuclear Fuels Services. After working for 30 years as plant supervisor he retired.  In 1966 he sold the farm on Roszyk Hill Road and moved to Williams Ave in West Valley with his family. After his two children grew up Hadley and Patty were able to build their dream house together, a beautiful log home.

He and his wife had great adventures traveling all around the country and visiting cousins in England. Even after his dear wife passed, he continued to travel with their lifelong friend Marion Foster-Jordan. He enjoyed playing in euchre tournaments and had made many cherished friends. Hadley had a big heart, and he was always there to help anyone who needed a hand.

He is survived by; his two children, Jeffery Shaffner and Tyna (Dan) Dibble; 7 grandchildren; and Old Papa to 6 great-grandchildren.

Hadley is predeceased by his wife Patty, his parents, and his beloved younger brother Merrett E. Shaffner.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday (December18, 2021) at 1pm at the Guenther Funeral Home, 1303 E. State Street, Olean. Family requests masks are required.
