Harold McCord Obituary

Harold L. McCord of Olean, New York, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2021, at Olean General Hospital

Born August 17, 1941, in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Jesse and Anne Marie Obsitnick McCord. On May 3, 1969, in St. Mary of the Angels Roman Catholic Church in Olean, NY, he married Mary Kay Longnecker, who passed away on January 21, 2014.

He attended St. Bernard Catholic School in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Harold graduated from St. Bonaventure University with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English. He taught high school English at Ellicottville Central School from 1966 until 2000, when he retired. At Ellicottville, he was involved as a class advisor, Student Council advisor, and a S.A.D.D. Chapter advisor, which he was instrumental in starting.

He was a member of the New York State English Council and received their Teacher of Excellence Award. He also received the WNED-TV award for the utilization of television in the classroom.

He enjoyed teaching and encouraged his students to achieve their best. He also loved traveling with his wife and children to Ireland, South America, Canada, and various places in the United States.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary of the Angels Roman Catholic Church and a past president of the Parish Council. He has been attending St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany recently.

He is survived by a daughter, Moira (Timothy) Crooks of Worthington, Minnesota, a son, Brendan of Olean, New York, and six grandchildren: Sean, Waylon, Wyatt, Tessa, Payton, and Brendan, all of Worthington, Minnesota. He is also survived by his sisters: Sharon (Herbert) Skuba, Nancy (William) Prentiss, and Sue Ann (Douglas) Huntinzger, and a brother, Patrick (Julie) McCord.

He was predeceased by a brother, Cartlon; his parents, Jesse and Ann Marie; his wife, Mary Kay; and his brother-in-law, Herbert Skuba, Sr.

Private funeral services will be held at Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State Street, Olean on Saturday, January 30, 2021.  Father James Vacco, OFM of St. Bonaventure Church will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to the Olean Food Pantry 1708 Lincoln Avenue, Olean, NY.
