Loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother
Portville- Hilda L. “Tike” Gibbons, of 9837 Portville-Ceres Road, passed away Sunday (February 7, 2021) at the Olean General Hospital.
Born October 14, 1924 in Angelica, she was the daughter of the late, William and Emma Hass Schmidt. On March 17, 1950 in Northport, NY she married John J. Gibbons, who predeceased her on February 5, 2004.
Hilda was a graduate of Fillmore High School, class 1941. She went to the Craig School of Nursing at Sonyea and started her career as a dedicated Registered Nurse, first at the Northport VA Hospital and later with Portville Central School.
Hilda had a strong faith in God and was a longtime member of the Sacred Heart Church in Portville She was a member of the Portville American Legion Auxiliary, post # 814, and served as past President. Hilda was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed reading, writing poetry and writing articles for Reader’s Digest. She also loved playing the lottery. Most of all, she truly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Surviving are her children; James (Linda) Gibbons of Port Jefferson Station, Michael J. Gibbons of Portville, Patricia A. (Daniel) Coble of Conesus, John P. Gibbons of Portville, and Anne M. (Ernie) Hoak of Portville; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Rebecca, Jimmy, Matthew, Timothy, Megan, and Jon; ten great-grandchildren, Emma, Nora, David, Katie, Ben, Zoey, Isabel, Evan, Eric and Daisy; one sister, Martha (Roy) Winans of Tucson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by; one granddaughter, Amanda; her brothers; William, Frederick, Harold, George, John; and her sisters; Emy, Edna, Frieda, Millie, and Betty.
Private funeral services will be held at the Oratory of the Sacred Heart in Portville on Friday (February 12, 2021). Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
Memorials if desired can be made to the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, 115 E. Main Street, Allegany.
