Jan Victor Babcock, a devoted father and grandfather, loving husband, favorite uncle, friend for life, gentleman, and a scholar, passed away on September 29, 2023, in Henderson, NV. He was born on May 13, 1947, in Olean, he was the son of Edward and Roberta Ragsdale Babcock. On April 27, 2009, he married the former Linda Ward, who survives.
Jan attended Olean High School, graduating in 1965. He furthered his education at the University of Oregon, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974, and the University of Kentucky, where he earned a Master of Science degree in 1976.
Jan had a distinguished career, serving as an Environmental Health and Safety manager at IBM for over twenty years. He also held positions at Yuasa Battery in Reading, PA, Blommer Chocolate in Union City, CA, and Ryder Trucking in Sacramento, CA. His final job was as a Program Manager at NASA in Mountain View, CA. Additionally, he served as a Department Head at Wright College in Chicago, IL.
Jan was a member of the St. Thomas Moore Community in Henderson, NV, where he worshipped. Outside of work, he had a passion for various hobbies. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards, especially Mississippi Stud, at the casinos. In his youth, he was a surfer and remained an avid reader throughout his life. He was also an unwavering fan of the Kentucky Wildcats.
Jan will be deeply missed by his surviving family members, including his loving wife Linda; devoted daughter Jana Babcock Durbin; grandson Charlie Durbin, granddaughter Lollie Durbin; step-daughter Amy (Brent) Grandusky, granddaughter Chloe Grandusky, granddaughter Delaney Grandusky;a sister Lynn Navarez; nephews Anthony (Angela) Dubin, David Dubin, and Aaron Dubin, nieces Mary (Michael) Caprino and Marlana Dubin Griffitts.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Judy Babcock.
A Celebration of Life for Jan Victor Babcock will be held in Olean, in the spring of 2024. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Nevada Chapter of ALS in honor of Jan's memory.
