Janice Caya Obituary

Janice M. Caya

Loving wife, mother, and grandmother

PORTVILLE – Janice M. Caya of 481 Portville Ceres Rd passed peacefully at home, on February 29, 2024, surrounded by her children.

Born in Portville, October 3, 1932, she was the daughter of Freeman and Susan Young Burroughs. On October 31, 1953, she married the love of her life, Francis (Hoppy) Caya, who predeceased her on July 7, 2004.

Janice was a 1951 graduate of Portville Central School. She worked as a telephone operator at Bell Telephone Company, where she was quickly promoted to supervisor. After starting her family, she gave up her job to become a stay-at-home mom. In 1959, Janice and Hoppy purchased Red’s and Trudy’s and operated a successful business until selling the restaurant to their son, Frederick and his wife, Melanie in 2000. After that time, she enjoyed spending her winters in her Florida home.

Janice was a member of the Sacred Heart church in Portville until it’s closing and then joined the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, in Olean. Her faith and love of Jesus was first and foremost in her life. She dedicated several years teaching religious education at PCS.

Janice was involved with the PTA at Portville Central School and was also a den mother for Girls Scouts. She had several hobbies including sewing, knitting, and gardening in her younger years. She was a member of a writer's group in Portville and her Florida home. She wrote several stories, fiction and non-fiction that will be treasured by her loved ones. In her later years, she loved puzzling, the daily crossword and word jumbles. On Sundays, you could find her in front of her TV watching NFL football and always cheering for her Bills.

Janice is survived by her children, Paula (Ben) Cahoon, Frederick (Melanie) Caya, Joseph (Karen) Caya, Catherine (Rod) Olson and Richard (Ketnia) Caya; 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn (William) Francis and one brother, Michael (Debbie) Burroughs; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Francis (Hoppy); her parents, Freeman and Susan; her siblings, Robert Burroughs, Dona O’Neil, Patricia (Patty) Chastain, Catherine (Kay) Linn, and Donald Burroughs.

Friends will be received at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 51 S. Main St, Portville, on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 4pm – 7pm. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 10am at the Sacred Heart Church in Portville. Burial will follow in Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
