Jeffrey Dowdell Obituary

Jeffrey Houston Dowdell loving father

Madison, TN- Jeffrey Houston Dowdell, 58, passed away on December 21, 2023, at his home in Madison, TN, from a chronic illness. Jeff, fondly known as Canada by friends, was born to Joyce Jordan Clifford and George James Dowdell on October 25, 1965. He was the 2nd generation of Scottish heritage and was born in Toronto, Canada.

Jeff attended Elmlea Junior School in Toronto and had happy memories of playing ice hockey in a backyard ice rink. He and his family moved to the Olean area when he was in elementary school. He graduated from the Olean High School and BOCES Masonry Program in 1984. Some of his hobbies were drawing, reading mythology books and playing Dungeons and Dragons. Jeff had a love for history, like his father, knew trivia, and watched Jeopardy, like his mother.

After high school, Jeff served in the US Navy on the USS Constellation from July 1984 to July 1987. Jeff received the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation. While in the Navy, Jeff learned to box; after the Navy, he competed in the NY Golden Gloves Tournament.

Upon returning to Olean, Jeff worked at the AM&A’s Department Store and had good memories with co-workers. While working, Jeff completed Business Management Classes at Saint Bonaventure University. He loved music and attended many rock concerts. Jeff had a love for listening to Elvis, like his parents. He liked NASCAR, and his favorite NASCAR driver was Dale Earnhardt. His favorite teams were the Toronto Maple Leafs and the former Oakland Raiders. Jeff enjoyed watching the Toronto Maple Leafs play the Buffalo Sabres.

Throughout Jeff’s work career, he held multiple jobs as a Maintenance Technician. He enjoyed working at Saint Bonaventure University and the Windlands East Retirement Center the best. During these employments, he made good friends with the late Billy Karl and James Butler. While with his good friends and family, Jeff loved the warm weather, cookouts, and grilling.

Jeff is survived by his former wife, Nicol Stier-Dowdell; their children, Morgan and Connor Dowdell of Olean; his brother, Scott (Dori) Dowdell of Maryland; sisters, Laurie Dowdell of Olean and Sharon (Chris) Greene of Tennessee; five nieces and one nephew.
