Louis William Ensworth, longtime teacher and loving cousin

Allegany- Louis William Ensworth, of the Five Mile Rd, Allegany, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at the Olean General Hospital after a short illness.

Louis was born in Allegany on March 22, 1933, the son of the late Burritt and Ellen Anderson Ensworth.

He graduated from Allegany High School in 1941. Louis joined the United States Navy after graduating and served from 1955 to 1957. He then attended St. Bonaventure University, where he earned a Bachelor’s in education and a Master’s in education from the University of Georgia. Louis worked at Olean High School, where he taught typing and driver's ed.

Louis was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allegany. He liked to go bowling, roller skating, and was an avid race fan of all types. When going to Florida for the winters, he would plan his return trip home allowing for stops at current races. His favorite hobby was finding and fixing up old bicycles and giving them away.

Louis is survived by his cousins, David Anderson, Linda Carleton, and several 2nd cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Burritt and Ellen, and several cousins.

Family will receive friends at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 36 N 4th St., Allegany, on Saturday, May 10, 2025, with visitation from 10 am to 11 am, and a funeral service starting at 11 am, with Rev. Gerard leFeber officiating. Burial will follow in Allegany Cemetery.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to Meals on Wheels, Cattaraugus County Visiting Nurses, or St. John’s Lutheran Church.
