Richard W. Moore, Sr. husband, father, and grandfather
Murrells Inlet, SC- ‘Sonny Moore’ passed away peacefully Monday (November 13, 2023) after a long illness at Murrells Inlet, SC., surrounded by his loving family.
Sonny was born November 7, 1941, in Olean, to Harry and Eva Bush Moore. He was raised in Olean and attended Olean High School. He met the love of his life, Linda (Port) Moore at the Cuba Lake Pavilion, and together they raised their four children in Olean.
Sonny worked at Olean General Hospital, Ka-Bar in Olean, and retired from NYS DEC in 1996 as flood control supervisor. In 1998, they moved to South Carolina, where they enjoyed living near the ocean and spending time with friends at the Garden City Pier.
He also loved his many campers and RVs over the years, taking his children to the Birch Canoe campground in Myrtle Beach, and closer to home many weekends enjoyed at the Allegany State Park. Sonny and Linda also enjoyed traveling to Florida in the winter, and their many cruises. He also loved hunting, fishing, and watching Bill's football games.
Sonny is survived by his wife Linda of 62 years; his children, Melinda Foote of Allegany, Patty (Dave) Stewart of Olean, Tina (John) Moore of St. Mary’s, PA. and Richard (Debbie) Moore, Jr. of Olean; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren of whom he was very proud; a brother, Ronnie (Mary) Moore of Portville and a sister, Shirley Johnson of N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and a very special family friend, Steve Jackson of Garden City, S.C.
He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Barbara Becker in 2022; and a step-grandson, Lee Desmond in 2010.
Friends will be received at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc. 1303 E. State St, Olean, on Sunday (November 19, 2023) from 11 am-1 pm. Funeral services will begin at 1 pm, with Rev. Dawn Quesenberry, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery, Allegany.
