Olean- Roberta A. Mahar, formerly of 928 Prospect Ave., passed away Monday (September 25, 2023) at the Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Olean.
Born November 25, 1935, in Olean, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Alice Atwood Mountain. On November 24, 1962, in St. John’s Church, she married Francis J. Mahar Jr., who predeceased her on March 5, 2015.
Roberta received her master’s degree in education from St. Bonaventure University. She worked as a social worker for Catholic Charities in Buffalo before she began teaching for Hinsdale Central School, where she taught for twenty years.
Roberta was a longtime St. John’s Church parishioner and a National Retired Teachers Association member. She and her late husband proudly established the Mahar Family Foundation Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
She is survived by one brother, Paul (Laura) Mountain of Ontario, Canada; nieces Colleen Rose, Sarah Mountain, and Maureen Bailey; her brothers-in-law, James Mahar, Sr. of Olean, Paul (Judy) Mahar of Olean, Thomas (Kathy) Mahar of Olean; and Joseph (Roberta) Mahar of Olean; her sisters-in-law, Ellen (William) Weidner of Allegany, Mary (Richard) Montgomery of Penfield; and Lorie Mahar of Dover, DE; several nieces and nephews. Her dear caregiver and friend, Laura Ullman of Scio, and her beloved dog, Sadie, also survive.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Daniel Mahar and John Mahar; sister-in-law, Margaret Mahar of Olean; and many extended family members.
The family will receive friends on Friday (September 29, 2023) from 9:30-10:30 am at St. John’s Church (931 N. Union Street, Olean), with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 am. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SPCA, 2944 Route 16N, Olean.
