Portville- Roy G. Griffin of 1180 Lillibridge Road, Portville, passed away Thursday (September 21, 2023) at his home.
Born June 16, 1937, in Portville, he was the son of the late Gerald and Marian Norton Griffin. On June 13, 1959, at the First Presbyterian Church in Portville, he married Joan E. Ingram, who survives.
Roy graduated from Portville Central School and the Lincoln Welding School in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a welder at Dresser Rand-Clark Bros before becoming the Portville Highway Superintendent. Later, he was an asphalt salesman for Midland Asphalt Company out of Allegany.
Roy was a longtime River’s Edge United Methodist Church member in Portville and the Portville Masonic Temple #579. He loved to spend the winter months in Florida with his wife. He also enjoyed the many years he raised cattle on his farm. Roy will be remembered for his very social personality and ability to converse with anyone he had met. He will also be remembered as a talented fiddle player, playing weekly at Avalon Park with all the other talented musicians and singers.
In addition to his wife, Roy is survived by; four children, Timothy R. (Mary Maynard) Griffin of Portville, Gary G. (Mary Yaw) Griffin of Portville, Ellen J. (Michael) Thompson of Colorado, and Sally A. (Jeffery) Heffner of Horseheads; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Jean Moran of Portville.
He was predeceased by; one sister, Virginia M. Griffin.
Friends will be received at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 51 S. Main Street, Portville on Monday from 6-8 pm and again on Tuesday (September 26, 2023) from 10 am-11 am. Funeral services will begin at 11 am in the funeral home. Rev. Dawn Quesenberry, pastor of River’s Edge United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
