Salvatore “Sammy” Veno, loving father, brother, and friend
Olean- Salvatore “Sammy” Veno, of W. Oak St., Olean, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at his brother’s home in Westons Mills, surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with cancer.
Sammy was born in Olean on May 18, 1942, the son of the late Barbara (Beebe) and Carl Veno Sr. On January 30, 1965, in Geneseo, he married the former Jan Brooks, who predeceased him on February 7, 2019.
He was a standout football player for Olean High School and graduated from Olean in 1961. Sammy graduated from the police academy and joined the Olean Police Dept. serving for 24 years and receiving many merits. With his love of baseball, he coached Olean Little League baseball for many years. Sammy also loved to watch football and cowboy movies. He was a lifetime member of St. John’s Parish and past President of the St. Stephens Club.
Sammy is survived by his children, Marcus (Marcy) Veno, Michele (John) Wagner, and Matthew Veno; 7 grandchildren; a brother, Dave (Joyce) Veno Sr.; a brother-in-law, Wibert Frost; a sister-in-law, Sharon Veno; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jan; his parents, Barbara and Carl Sr.; a son, Michael Veno; a brother, Carl Veno Jr.; a sister, Kathleen Veno Frost; and a long-term companion, Bobby Baker.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, June 1, 2025, from 4 pm to 7 pm, at Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E State St., Olean. Funeral services celebrating Sammy’s life will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, beginning with a prayer service in the Funeral Home at 9:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John’s Church, 931 N. Union St, Olean, at 10 am. Burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
