Sarah R. Proctor, an Angel sent to help
OLEAN — Sarah R. Proctor, of Olean, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Olean General Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Jan. 6, 1945, in Olean, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow and Myrtle (Green) Braley.
Sarah dedicated her entire life to the service and care of others, always putting their needs ahead of her own. As a young woman, she selflessly left school early to care for her mother after she suffered a broken back. She later went on to raise her three boys independently with unwavering dedication. Over the years, Sarah worked for the Olean School District, Holiday Inn, Eden Heights, and as a private caretaker for elderly individuals in the community. Known for her boundless generosity, she was always willing to do absolutely anything to help someone in need. When she wasn't caring for others, Sarah enjoyed sewing, working on puzzles, and shopping for the best bargains.
Sarah’s greatest joy was her family. Surviving are three sons, Curt (Dannielle) Proctor of Portville, James (Kelly) Proctor of Cortez, CO, and John (Cindy) Proctor of Olean; six grandchildren, Corri, Chloe, Connor, Riley, Samantha, and Emily; three sisters, Ada (Tom) Farr, Ida (Dale) Baker, and Shirley (Lelon) Allen; and one brother, Woody (Marion) Braley; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Alice “DuBois” Shaw and Arlouine (Braley) Houghtaling, and her partner and long-time friend, Russell Herron.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean, where funeral services will follow at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cattaraugus County SPCA Animal Shelter in Olean, NY.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Guenther Funeral Home, 1303 E. State St., Olean.
