Olean- Violet A. Butler, a lifelong Olean resident, passed away Saturday (April 23, 2022) at the Olean General Hospital.
Born October 12, 1927, in Olean, she was the daughter of Richard and Margaret Lundy Corson. On March 29, 1948, in St. John’s Church, she married Edward Butler, who predeceased her on July 14, 2009.
Violet was a graduate of Olean High School, class of 1945. After getting married, she stayed home and raised her seven children. Throughout the years Violet was very active in the community. She was a den mother for the Boy Scouts, a volunteer at the Olean General Hospital for 42 years, and a founding member of the Archbishop Walsh Foundation. She was also a member of the Archbishop Walsh quilting group, Card Club, and Parents Club. Currently, she was the Vice President of Southern Tier Realty Co. in Olean.
A devout catholic, Violet was a lifelong Parishioner of St. John’s Church and a member of their Altar Rosary Society and the St. John’s Homeschool association.
She was a proud St. Bonaventure Bonnies Fan and a season ticket holder since the Reilly Center first opened. In her free time, she enjoyed antiquing, bowling, and golfing. She was a longtime member of the Birch Run Country Club, Olean YMCA, and the Boardmanville Home Bureau..
From traveling with her husband to Ireland, Europe, and wintering in St. Augustine, Florida to family game night, picnics on Homer Hill, and time at her son’s cottage on Cuba Lake, Violet’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.
She is survived by; six children, Edward M. (Karen) Butler, John P. (Linda) Butler, Daniel A. (Dianne) Butler, Anne (Steven) Butler-Rybicki, Thomas P. (Kathleen) Butler all of Olean, and Richard F. (Joanne) Butler of Lancaster; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard F. (Shirley) Corson and Charles W. (Joan) Corson; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Violet was predeceased by; one son, Joseph C. Butler and five sisters.
Friends will be received at the Guenther Funeral Home, 1303 E. State Street, Olean today (Tuesday) from 4-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday (April 27, 2022) at 1pm at St. John’s Church, 931 N. Union Street, Olean. Burial will follow in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany
